Nike patents “Back to the Future” shoes!
Apparently our friends at Nike’s innovation lab have been plenty busy thinking of “the future”.
As stated in the World Intellectual Property Organization’s website (WIPO), Nike International LTD has filed a patent application for a shoe with an automatic lacing system just like the one worn by Michael J. Fox in the 1989 hit movie “Back to the Future II”.
Here’s the abstract from the actual application:
“An article of footwear with an automatic lacing system is disclosed. The automatic lacing system provides a set of straps that can be automatically opened and closed to switch between a loosened and tightened position of the upper. The article further includes an automatic ankle cinching system that is configured to automatically adjust an ankle portion of the upper.”
“Back to the Future II” was nominated for an Oscar for best visual effects back in 1990, the Nike “Air Mag” shoes were featured when Marty McFly and Doc Brown made an exciting trip to the future to resolve a few problems with the McFly family. The movie then takes an unexpected turn when Marty buys a book called “Grey’s Sports Almanac” which contained futuristic sports statistics.
